Oasis Camel Dairy

Yesterday we visited the only camel dairy in the country.  I didn’t really know much about camels, so I wanted to go and see what we could learn.  The owners are extremely nice, and are open about once a month for public tours.  Turns out camels are pretty nice animals, and like people.  The first one we met was loose, wandering around visiting people. They had thought to use her for therapy work, but she isn’t suitable because she may knock you over when you STOP petting her.   Camels can control their milk letdown, the baby has to ask for it.  Once it flows, it only flows for about 90 seconds.  In the wild they wouldn’t be able to keep up with the rest of the herd if they stopped to nurse for a long time.

Check out their website for more info.  Its morning right now, and the kids are bored.  When I wait until I have uninterrupted time, the blog doesn’t get updated.

Did you kiss the camel?

Nah, I’m not sure Sean would kiss me again if I did that.

Oh so cool! That’s neat that you guys got to go there. Glad to see that San Diego is working out for all of you. Enjoy the beach!

Very interesting … I have never heard of a camel dairy. There is a Kangaroo Conservation Center in northern Georgia which is interesting too.
