We finally got ourselves out of Starke at noon, next time I’d really like to get out a couple of hours earlier. We drove 4 hours, to just north of Savannah. Phillips, saying she is not granting media https://overnightessay.co.uk/ interviews during her first months on the job. We got a sticker map for the RV, its a blank outline of the US, and has individual state stickers you put on after you’ve been to that state. So today, we got to put on Georgia and South Carolina. Caitlin got bored, and did what she could to entertain herself, see the photos. We did some schooling during the trip, which worked out pretty well. It helped pass the time, and was productive. I think 4 hours might be about the max we can travel in a day, the kids seemed about at the end of their patience by then. Though I suppose I could break out the DVD player, I haven’t tried that yet. I’m trying to save it for emergencies. We got off I-95 right after Savannah, and crossed into South Carolina on a smaller road, the first two buildings we saw after coming in were topless bars. I would have taken pictures, but I didn’t want to explain to the kids why I was taking them. All the travel literature about Savannah keeps going on and on about the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Its several years old, and I remember trying to read it when it came out, but it was too boring. I might try to read the Cliff’s Notes tonight. The campground is very basic, no pool, no playground, but its very pretty and quiet. We finally have enough trees to shade the RV all day long. We met the caretaker after we got here, he was very informative and interesting to talk to. He told us to check out this little town in New York where he’s from, so we’ll add that to the list. The kids didn’t seem to care about no pool, they are very happy riding their bikes together these days. We want to see a bit of Savannah, and Tybee Island while we are here, which is why we are staying two full days. By the time we do all the setup and take down, and drive, we can’t actually see anything on travel days. I think Sophie is liking being in new places, there are always so many fascinating new smells. She has even gotten over her phobia about peeing in strange places. 🙂

Starke is very stark
We had a great time Friday, despite being in this podunk tiny town. We did some schooling in the morning, had lunch with a friend and her two daughters, then hung out at their house for a while. It was so nice to spend quality time chatting in a spacious house. Caitlin had been bugging me for months to make sure we got to visit these girls again before we leave Florida. Then we picked up Sophie and went to our other friend’s farm for a delicious dinner and some horseback riding. It was fantastic. I had planned to ride while we were at Disney, but I couldn’t make myself cough up $42 for a 45 minute ride on a pre-programmed robot horse. Sandy and I went for a ride around her property, and it didn’t take long to remember that it has been many years since I’ve actually ridden. I definitely need a more heavily padded saddle! It was fun though, my horse got ticked off at me when I wouldn’t let her run back to the barn, and we had a little argument. It was great. Wouldn’t have been so great if I had gotten thrown, but I didn’t. When we got back to the barn Ian and Caitlin wanted to ride too, so they took turns riding Lexi around a little bit. Caitlin loved it and thinks we should get a horse when we settle down.
Goodbye Orlando!!
It seemed this day would never come, but we are finally out of Orlando. We left this morning, and drove to Starke, which is known for housing the state penitentiary. This is reasonably close to both friends we want to visit up here. The drive was pretty easy. We could literally see the gas gauge going down as we drove. We used a little over half a tank to drive almost 150 miles, it cost me $122 last time I filled the truck up, so approximately $70 to get here. We stopped at a service plaza on the Turnpike for a potty break, and a bite to eat. The kids are all excited about collecting squished pennies, so that is one of our goals as we travel around. They had a machine at the service plaza so they finally got some pennies that aren’t Disney themed. Caitlin and I went outside while the men got food, and she noticed a stinky smell. There was a cow hauler truck nearby so she learned a bit about those. The driver saw us talking about his rig, so he honked his horn. Most kids would like that, she just thought he was weird. Our GPS data isn’t so hot, the campground was not where it was supposed to be. We ended up having to drive around a bunch of tiny, bumpy streets to turn around. That was fun. https://samedaypaper.org/… Now we are at a KOA campground, and it seems pretty nice. Free wi-fi, free cable, pool, playground, etc. Its raining now, so we can’t actually go outside. We plan to leave here Saturday morning and start making our way up to D. C. area. Oh, after we unhooked the truck, I managed to back it into the tripod support we have under the front of the trailer. Guess its not quite as strong now with a bent leg.
One month anniversary
It occurred to me today, that it has now been a month since we moved into the RV. I could write a book of all the things I hate about living in an RV. So far, we’ve got all the crappiest parts, and not much of the fun stuff. I’m counting on things getting better once we get out of Florida, and start going places we’ve never been before. Otherwise, this might be an awfully short adventure. I really, really want to see the Northwest and Northeast though, so I’m not ready to give up yet. I seem to be the only one having trouble with the small space issue so far. The kids are fine, Sean is fine. He hasn’t been living in it 24/7 for long yet though. We’ll see if he changes his mind. It has come to my attention that some men are using our adventures to point out to their wives what cushy lives they have. I think this counts as a public service on our part, and I’m happy we can help others appreciate their lives more fully. So, the big news is that we are finally getting out of Orlando tomorrow morning. We sold Sean’s car yesterday, have gotten all our loose ends tied up, and now we can leave. We said we were all going clack to translate to work together for the good of the children, mr… First stop is somewhere south of Jacksonville for a couple of nights, so we can visit friends. Sometime during those couple of days we’ll have to actually make a decision on what to do from there. We need to figure out how far north we want to try to go before the weather starts getting too cold. We’ve seen lots of wildlife around here, below are some of the pictures. I didn’t have my camera, but tonight we were riding our bikes over a bridge on the way to the pool, and saw an anhinga (bird that fishes underwater) in the creek below. Caitlin and I stopped to watch and saw him catch 3 fish in about that many minutes. Then we saw another bunny around the corner, we’ve seen lots of those. If you hover your mouse over the thumbnail, you can read the comment.
Sunday
Tuesday
So far, two days in, things are going well. We found the closest pool yesterday, and we went back again today. Its a big pool, so is definitely easier when Sean and I can both be there to watch the kids. For the first time, we’ve been able to grill out, and eat outside in the evenings. With lots of bug spray of course. The mosquitoes are horrendous, which is to be expected since we are in the woods and there is quite a bit of standing water around. I’m thinking of taking a week off from school next week, there is so much to do around here, and I want to get our money’s worth. One of the many nice things about Disney is that they have trash cans next to every site, and recycling stations too! My neighbors in the old neighborhood will be happy, I had been saving recycling to put in their bin while we still can. The park has cleared out a lot now that the holiday is over, we only have a few neighbors, its nice.
Catching up
Thursday – the kids and I were bored, so we went to Monkey Joe’s. Its an inflatable bounce house place. The kids really love bounce houses, and I don’t know how many places we are going to find in our travels, so we went and had some fun. The trouble is, we went in the morning, which is when we usually do school. It didn’t work at all to switch and do school in the afternoon. Friday – We had to get up early and pack up the RV. The roof stopped leaking since we quit getting rain all day, but with another storm headed this way, we thought it would be a good idea to get it looked at by a professional. When Sean started to put the TV antennae down, (a crank handle on the roof) it came off in his hand, and dumped water on his head. How handy that it happened on the way to the repair shop. I drove the RV for the first time, the whole quarter of a mile to Camping World! I’m not sure that really counts though. Anyway, the tech took one look at the roof and said we really needed to do some maintenance. He showed us cracks in most of the joint seals. So we got the whole thing redone and sealed with some stuff. Then we had to go hang out at our neighbor’s house in the old neighborhood for pretty much the whole day. We are trapped in tourist hell here. Our current RV resort is on 192, which is a huge tourist area, hence the giant orange building, and the giant wizard gift shop. There are many, many gaudy buildings all around us. But the worst part is the idiot drivers. I don’t know if they all drive this way at home, or if they just become stupid when they get here, but I’m amazed there aren’t more car accidents every day. This is one of the things I’m really looking forward to getting away from. We’ve had several more RV’s show up today, I suppose for the holiday weekend. There are several more dogs too, though we haven’t actually met any on our walks. What bugs me is there is a lot more dog poop, many people with little dogs don’t bother to pick up after themselves, which makes all of us look bad. Saturday – Catastrophe for today – no water all day. Apparently there was a leaking pipe underground, and when the repairmen started to fix it, it just broke and the whole park lost water. It was another hot, muggy day, and now no showers, no water to flush toilets, it was a nightmare. Sunday – This day was much better. I went out to lunch with 2 of our old neighbors and enjoyed some adult conversation for several hours. After I got back, the weather was cloudy and not oppressively humid for once. For the first time, we were able to let the kids ride their bikes for awhile, Sean grilled out, and we ate outside. Sophie was very happy to spend more than a few minutes outside.
Wednesday
Nothing terribly exciting is happening right now. We are having trouble with with our internet connection device. I spent all day with no internet, talk about living in the dark ages! Figures we would get a lemon of whatever this thing is. The company is going to FedEx us a new one this week. I’ve just been plugging along, doing the homeschool thing with the kids during the day. I LOVE the flexibility and being able to go to class in our pajamas. Now that the tropical storm is done, we’ve been going swimming in the morning for PE class. Its so hot I’ve been going swimming with them. The pool is a good size, we can do decent laps. Caitlin is practicing diving underwater. I’ve been trying to do some of the swim strokes we saw on the Olympics, and now Ian is attempting some of them too. Its so cool. We went to Target today and picked up some closed top straw cups for the kids. They can certainly drink out of normal cups and glasses, but in such a tight space cups were constantly getting knocked over. Caitlin is all excited about hers, its got drawings of Dora doing rhythmic gymnastics, just like we saw on the Olympics. She can’t wait for the winter Olympics, and doesn’t really understand why she has to wait two years. Yesterday we met a couple who just arrived in a giant motorhome, and chatted for awhile. Turns out they’ve just been doing exactly what we are planning to do. They’ve spent the last 2 years driving around the States and through Canada. They spent the previous 3 years on a boat, travelling around. Now they have to come back to Florida and work again. The woman is from Washington state, and said its too cold and rainy for her. I asked if it rains for a little while each day, or all day long. She said all day long, and the temp is 40-50 degrees on top of it. Hmmmm. I just got done telling Sean how sick I was of getting wet every time we went outside for anything during our 5 days of solid rain. I’m still not ruling Washington out though, we’ll have to go experience it for ourselves. I’m still trying to get a family portrait in front of the rig, but its not working yet. Sean still has to work all day, on the weekends we’re doing errands, or just plain forgetting about it. One of these days.
Happy Birthday to Me
So for my birthday today, the sun came out all morning long. I was right, it was a sauna outside. But it was still nice to see. Shortly after we woke up we went to Krispy Kreme for some hot, fresh glazed donuts. These are my favorite donuts in the whole world, and there is a store right down the street from our park. Then we came back to the RV, and I went back to bed for some more lounging around time. Sophie came with me and snuggled next to me. I didn’t actually get back to sleep, but it was still very peaceful, the kids stayed out of the bedroom. Then we went out and did a little shopping. I found some shoes that I had been looking for. Then we went and bought some cupcakes at Target. The kids had been bugging me like crazy all day for that. They love birthdays because they get cake. We had a nice low key dinner at home, easy prep for Sean, no dishes for me to do. As we came out of Target, it started raining again and hasn’t stopped. The trials will read this book review involve diabetics and chronic disease patients, and are expected to provide some insight into how healthkit will work on iphones in actual practice. Poor Sophie, all the rain kept washing away all the pee mail, so walks have been a little boring for her.
